Sublime Sohaib Maqsood helps Sultans’ outplay Zalmi
Dubai March 6: Defending champions Peshawar Zalmi failed in the pursuit of a 184 run score in the latest HBL (Pakistan Super League) PSL clash played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium as table toppers Multan Sultan consolidated their position with a 19 run win.
Set the stiffest target in the tournament to date the defending champions went down fighting as stand-in captain Mohammad Hafeez held one end together with a 48 ball 56 run innings that in the end proved an inadequate effort.
Zalmi found some life in their chase in the death overs when Liam Dawson took on Imran Tahir and Junaid Khan but the all-rounder’s departure in the penultimate over bowled by Sohail Tanvir sealed Zalmi’s fate
Tanvir who took a second consecutive three wicket haul bowled a splendid over accounting for Dawson and Hammad Azam conceding a mere two runs to put the game out of Zalmi’s reach.
Earlier, a smashing unbeaten 85 run innings off a mere 42 balls studded with seven sixes and four fours by Man-of-the-Match Sohaib Maqsood propelled Sultans to their 183 run total, the highest of the tournament so far.
Sohaib’s innings was also the highest individual score of the tournament so far surpassing Luke Ronchi’s 71 for Islamabad United against Karachi Kings last Sunday.
The big-hitting batsman was severe on the Zalmi fast bowlers and struck some lusty blows against the four pronged attack of Wahab Riaz, Sameen Gul, Hasan Ali and Umaid Asif.
Sohaib arrived at the crease after the fall of stalwart Kumar Sangakkara who was bowled for 28 by Liam Dawson after the left-hander had combined for a 51 run partnership with Ahmed Shehzad who was later dismissed through a run out for a run-a-ball 37.
Kieron Pollard joined Sohaib in the final stages of the innings and scored a quickfire unbeaten 16 in a 43 run partnership that took the Sultans past the 180 run mark.
