Gladiators score much needed win against Sultans as Gul six-for goes in vain
Dubai March 7: Languishing at the fifth spot before the start of the match the Quetta Gladiators made a grand comeback by defeating table-toppers in a HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) nail-biter at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
The match was settled by a smashing sixer by Pakistan U19 captain Hassan Khan who hoiced Kieron Pollard over the mid-wicket fence on the penultimate ball of the game as the Gladiators gave their mentor Sir Vivian Richards the perfect birthday gift.
On the other hand Hassan’s heroics spoiled the party for fast bowler Umar Gul who while making his first appearance for Multan Sultans took an HBL PSL 2018 record six wicket haul conceding a mere 24 runs in his four overs.
Umar’s last over was full of action packed cricket as the pacer accounted for Anwar Ali and Sarfraz Ahmed after Anwar and Rile Rossouw had hit him for crucial maximums in the same over.
Gladiators kept losing wickets in their chase but owed their success to significant contributions by Shane Watson, Asad Shafiq, Rameez Raja Jr, Anwar, Rossouw and the match winning stroke by the nerveless Hassan.
The Sultans had a horror start to their innings as the highest run-getter in the ongoing edition Kumar Sangakkara perished on the very first ball of the match bowled by Mohammad Nawaz.
Sultans were rocked again as Ahmed Shehzad fell to a catch behind the stumps off Anwar Ali. The two early strikes justified Sarfraz Ahmed’s decision to field first at the toss.
Sultans decided to counter attack and sent Sohail Tanvir up the order, the left-hander scored a quickfire 19 before losing his wicket to Shane Watson.
The hero of Sultans’ triumph against Zalmi last night Sohaib Maqsood played some delightful shots but his innings was cut short by Gladiators debutant Ben Laughlin who had him lbw for 28.
Shoaib Malik upped the scoring rate by taking on Mohammad Nawaz and depositing him in the stands twice in the same over.
Newcomer to the Sultans side Ross Whiteley chipped in with a 16 run contribution before falling to Rahat Ali.
Kieron Pollard helped Malik sneak past the 150 mark with an unbeaten 15 off 6 balls, Malik unfurled some big shots of his own to end on 65 off 43 balls, his innings included three sixes and four fours.
