Shaheen Shah Afridi stars as Qalandars break HBL PSL losing sequence with thumping win over Sultans
Dubai March 9: Out of the reckoning for a Play-Off berth, the Lahore Qalandars registered their first win in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018 edition as young pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi blew away Multan Sultans with a magical spell of reverse swing bowling in the death overs.
The lanky left-armer took five wickets conceding a mere four runs in a sensational burst of 3.4 overs that shocked the Sultans who collapsed from 92 for 1 to 114 all out, the second wicket fell in the 13th over and in span of six overs the innings folded in a dramatic manner.
Shaheen we later named Man-of-the-Match for his outstanding spell.
Only 22 runs were added as nine wickets fell in a maniac passage of play in the Sultans innings that folded in 19.4 overs.
Earlier openers Kumar Sangakkara (45) and Ahmed Shehzad (32) had laid a soild platform for the Qalandars who must have been eying a score around the 170 run mark before Shaheen’s match winning spell of pace bowling.
Sunil Narine took two wickets for 16 runs in his four over spell.
Qalandars had to face a small stutter in their chase after a bright start was given by Anton Devcich (22) and Fakhar Zaman (16) who added 33 for the opening wicket.
The top-order caved in afterwards as the scorebard read 44 for three. At this juncture captain Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten 35 led the Qalandars charge. The captain was well served by wicket-keeper Gulraiz Sadaf’s 27 run contribution that steadied the ship for the Lahore side.
The win was achieved by a blazing drive by McCullum much to the relief of the Qalandars dugout that had endured some shocking defeats which has ended their hopes of progress in the tournament.
