Qalandars win super over thriller to derail Karachi’s top spot hopes
Dubai March 11: The HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) produced another spellbinding thriller as Lahore Qalandars defeated Karachi Kings in a Super Over after the match was tied following unpreceneted drama.
Needing 12 runs to win the Super Over, Kings were halted in their progress as Sunil Narine bowled a brilliant over to ensure a sensational win for the Qalandars, Kings could only score 10 runs with Shahid Afridi hitting a six with eight required of the last ball.
The match was only brought to the Super Over stage as Usman Shinwari bowled a no-ball on the final ball with Qalandars needing three to win, it then came down to two off the last ball which was missed by Gulraiz Sadaf who was run out attempting a second run.
Qalandars were pursuing a 164 run target and were on course of a win following a half-century effort by Agha Salman who was dismissed by a brilliant double act catch at the mid-wicket boundary by Babar Azam and Lendl Simmons.
Brendon McCullum was dismissed in the same over but Qalandars were kept in the game by Sohail Akhtar who played some lusty shots before the last ball drama took the teams to the second super over of the ongoing season.
The loss has kept Kings at the third spot on the points table with Qalandars still languising at the last spot on the table, they are already out of reckoning for a Play-Off spot.
Earlier, Kings posted a 163 run total after being asked to bat first by Qalandars captain Brendon McCullum.
The score was made possible by half centuries from Babar Azam (61) and Lendl Simmons who scored a quickfire 55 off 39 balls with the help of one six and eight fours.
Babar who was dropped at nought by Shaheen Afridi hit one six and six fours in his innings.
Babar and Simmons added 72 run for their second wicket alliance off 56 balls.
