United continue red hot form with resounding win over Gladiators
Sharjah March 15: JP Duminy’s responsible 54 runs off 47 balls contribution gave Islamabad United firm grip of the top spot of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) points table as the former champions recorded an astonishing seventh win in a total of nine matches they have played so far in the 2018 edition of the league.
Duminy’s innings helped United get past the 148 run target set by Quetta Gladiators without any hiccups on a featherbed Sharjah Stadium pitch.
Duminy was well supported by Hussain Talat who scored 28 not out as United cruised home with 10 balls to spare.
Opener Luke Ronchi endured a rare failure as he fell for 10 to Rahat Ali, the left-armer was the most successful Gladiators bowler claiming two wickets for 33 runs.
The win has given United 14 points, they now await their opponent for the First Qualifier set to be played in Dubai on Sunday.
If Karachi Kings beat them in the last pool game tomorrow than they will proceed to play the First Qualifier.
If the Kings are beaten by United, Gladiators would retain the number two spot with 10 points and will clash with United for a direct entry for the March 25 final in Karachi.
Earlier, United were well served by their all-rounders led by Faheem Ashraf whose three wicket haul took him to the top of the bowlers pack in the HBL PSL.
Faheem now holds the Maroon Cap for the highest wicket-taker in the ongoing edition of the PSL.
Faheem was well supported by Ammad Butt who took two wickets for 30 runs in his four over spell.
Samit Patel took one wicket in his two over stint, Gladiators top heavy batting order failed to fire for the second succesive time as the trio of Jason Roy, Shane Watson and Kevin Pietersen lost their wickets cheaply.
Sarfraz Ahmed played a captain’s innings, scoring 43 runs off 30 balls with the help of two sixes and three fours but fell to Hussain Talat just when he looked set for a big one.
Umar Amin drafted in the eleven for the game today scored 28 off 27 balls with the help of a solitary six.
At halfway stage Gladiators 147 for seven total looked inadequate considering the nature of the pitch.
