Kings make it two out of two with last over win against Zalmi
DUBAI February 25: A first ball six by captain Imad Wasim took Karachi Kings over the line in a tricky 132 run chase against Peshawar Zalmi in the seventh match of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018 edition.
Imad walked in after the fall of Mohammad Rizwan and hit the fourth ball of spinner Mohammad Asghar’s over for a six to ensure a nervy win for his side with two balls to spare.
The match had evened out in the final over when Rizwan fell, leaving Kings needing three runs of as many deliveries.
Jo Denly (29) and Babar Azam (28) ensured that Kings’ lay a solid foundation for the chase after Khurram Manzoor perished for 6 runs courtesy a tumbling catch by Ibtisam Sheikh.
Ibtisam, the impressive young leg-spinner than removed Babar with the score at 58, Colin Ingram chipped in with a valuable 23 run contribution made off only 14 balls with the help of two fours and one six.
Chris Jordan and Asghar took one wicket each for Zalmi in impressive bowling bursts that made the relatively straight forward chase simple.
Kings’ though had done enough damage with the ball in the Kings’ innings that helped them prevail at the end.
Earlier, Man-of-the-Match Dwayne Smith fought singlehandedly as the rest of the batting line-up crumbled against the Kings’ bowling attack after Daren Sammy opted to bat first after winning the toss.
The West Indian Smith scored 71 not out off only 51 balls including five sixes and four fours, the second highest run-getter in the innings was Kamran Akmal who scored 14 runs.
Mohammad Amir started the rot by dismissing Tamim Iqbal and Kamran after the openers had laid foundations of a big score with a brisk start.
But the foundations crumbled in a heap as Kings made regular inroads in the Zalmi batting order.
In the 16th over the scoreboard read a precarious 79 for eight when Jordan was dismissed by his compatriot Tymal Mills.
Smith took charge at this stage; the right-hander added 52 runs with Wahab Riaz (8) and Mohammad Asghar who remained unbeaten on zero. He finished on a real high hitting two sixes off Bopara’s last over of the innings.
