6th Match Report: United register first win after a nervy small chase against Sultans
DUBAI February 25: Former champions Islamabad United recorded their first win of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2018 season as they overcame a mid-innings slump to beat newcomers Multan Sultans.
The start of the match was delayed due to light rain at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium; however the overs were not reduced.
United captain Rumman Raees won a crucial toss in overcast conditions and immediately went about the task of making the most of the conditions, Raees had Kumar Sangakkara dropped in the opening over of the match but the culprit Asif Ali made amends in the next over bowled by Raees taking a sharp catch to get rid of Sangakkara.
Darren Bravo was smartly held by Steven Finn off Mohammad Sami as the Sultans unbeaten before the match, endured a wretched start.
Sultans’ slumped further in their innings as Sohaib Maqsood and Ahmed Shehzad fell to poor shots, the scoreboard read 31 for four at this stage.
Captain Shoaib Malik (35) and Kieron Pollard (28) added 54 runs in a quickfire partnership but a late order stutter pegged back the Sultans, a flurry of wickets in the closing stages restricted the Sultans to a total of 113 in 19.5 overs.
Raees was the best bowler for United taking three wickets in 3.5 overs conceding a mere 14 runs, Sami and Andre Russell took two wickets each.
In reply United were rocked early as Mohammad Irfan snapped Luke Ronchi (for a duck) with a sharp lifting delivery that was smartly caught in the slips by Pollard.
Sahibzada Farhan and Asif Ali were both dismissed cheaply; Sultans sniffed a real chance of an upset win when Russell was given out lbw to Imran Tahir on the very first ball of his innings.
At 63 for five, United were rescued by their talented all-rounder Hussain Talat, the southpaw who won the Man-of-the-Match award scored an unbeaten 48 in 34 balls, his innings included three sixes and four fours.
Faheem Ashraf gave him great support by curbing his natural attacking instincts, the left-hander grinded out a crucial 12 off 20 balls to ensure a much needed victory for United with 14 balls to spare and five wickets in the kitty.
Tahir was the pick of the Sultans’ attack taking three wickets for 19 runs in his four over quota, Irfan and Junaid Khan took a wicket apiece.
