Ronchi blinder seals United’s HBL PSL final berth
DUBAI March 18: A scintillating batting display by Luke Ronchi sealed a comfortable eight wicket win and a place in the final of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Islamabad United as the First Qualifier went in the favour of the former champions with Karachi Kings suffering a battering.
The highest run getter in the HBL PSL 2018 edition cashed on some sloppy fielding by the Kings who gave him no less than three chances as he made light work of the 154 run chase at a heaving Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Ronchi’s magnificent unbeaten 94 run innings was unfurled off only 39 balls and included as many as five sixes and 12 fours.
The game was taken away from the Kings by a brutal opening stand of 91 runs between Ronchi and Sahibzada Farhan who struck three sixes in his 29 run innings that came off only 18 balls.
Alex Hales (14) and Samit Patel 14 not out helped Ronchi ensure a crushing win for the United team.
Kings bowlers had a forgettable night with Mohammad Amir, Tymal Mills, Usman Shinwari, Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Irfan Jr. all suffering at the hands of Ronchi, Shinwari, Khurram Manzoor and Afridi all dropped the right hander as he dashed Kings hopes of booking a place in a home final at Karachi at the first attempt.
Earlier, Kings stuttered to their 153 run total after losing early wickets. Captain Eoin Morgan had decided to bat first after winning the toss and his decision backfired when Kings lost Khurram, Babar Azam and Morgan cheaply.
Mohammad Sami set the tone for United’s win by removing both Khurram and Babar in the fourth over of the match, the Kings recovered and posted their eventual total largely due to half centuries by Colin Ingram and Joe Denly however the total was too low as proven by Ronchi’s audacious assault.
